Where In The World with Poppins Book Nook in March

It's that time again--time for a new theme for Poppins Book Nook! This month we are exploring with the theme "Where In The World?". Are you new to Poppins Book Nook? Poppins Book Nook is a fun book club of sorts where bloggers get together to share their favorite books on one theme as well as any activities they might have done surrounding the theme or the book they chose. There will be books spanning K-12th grades as we have a wide range of families co-hosting. We hope that we can give you new ideas for books or give you access to activities, printables and other resources you might not have discovered previously! Most of all, we just want you to share in our love of books!

As I said above, the theme for this month was "Where In The World?". I have been very busy and we didn't do any activities using this theme, but we did read an amazing book that I wanted to share with you.

Are you a fan of the children's book Harold and the Purple Crayon? Armed with just his purple crayon, little Harold goes on one adventure after another--drawing his way into exciting landscapes. During this past month we discovered a "grown-up" book version of Harold in the beautiful book Journey by Aaron Becker.

This book is an adventure to the visual senses! It is a true picture book in that there are no words. The story begins with a little girl sitting on the steps of her home. You can see in the picture the different rooms of her house, and the rest of her family busy doing something. The only color in the illustration is the girl's toy. In one scene it's a kite, in another a ball, and another a scooter. And it's always red. Next we see her in her room, just sitting on her bed...and this time the only color in the illustration is red--in the form of a red crayon. By now the reader begins to understand that it's always been her red crayon...for we see her picking up her red crayon and using it to draw...a door on her wall. She magically open her door and begins her journey...into another world with castles, flying ships, water cities and more. Armed with her crayon, she's able to draw herself various forms of transportation to allow her to explore this exotic land.

Near the end of the story you meet another character. A boy...armed with his OWN crayon. Bet you can't guess what color it is? Yep--purple! I like to think the author was paying homage to the Harold series.

Because the colors of the book were muted, to showcase the red and purple of each crayon, it was easy for my littlest to spot how the girl and boy used their crayons in their adventure.

And after reading the book, he grabbed HIS red and purple crayons and proceeded to draw....circles. LOL! If you read the book, you will understand his reasoning.

We mostly just "read" this book over and over to savor the illustrations and their details. Every time we read, we found new things we missed before.

We have taken other adventures with books in the past...one of the most fun was when we used the Five In A Row curriculum to read The Story of Ping. We enjoyed learning all about China during that week, and Little Britches loves pulling out his lapbook to look back on what we did. I'm thinking it's time we revisited the book!

If you are looking for books to introduce your children to other parts of the world, here are some of my recommendations from what my own boys love...
